check In

On Conde Nast Traveler’s 2022 Hot List, The Ryder Hotel is right in the heart of downtown’s historic district. Complete with a luxury pool, sleek cafe, and sophisticated, coastal-bohemian decor, this new boutique hotel is the perfect spot for solo travelers.

to explore

Solo traveling is all about experiencing something new and exploring. Discover the city through a history tour, like a horse and carriage ride, a ferry to Fort Sumter, or the famous Gateway Walk. Take a day trip to Magnolia Plantation or the Cypress Gardens, or just explore the French Quarter by foot. Check the craftsmen and artisan market in Charleston’s City Market, and on certain Sundays, King Street is closed for pedestrian traffic only.

to reflect

I never take a solo trip without my journal and camera. I find that having alone time within a new city creates the perfect atmosphere for inspiration, or even just getting lost in your thoughts. If you want to go somewhere to reflect, check out the Gibbes Museum of Art to see resident artists and three floors of classic paintings and sculptures. Or walk through the dozens of art galleries that line the streets near the Battery. But, my personal favorite place is Waterfront Park at sunset, by the Pineapple Fountain. Bring a picnic and enjoy.

to indulge

One of the best things about Charleston is that the food scene there is truly an art. There is no shame in sitting alone at a restaurant or bar, because the entertainment undeniably comes from the cuisine. Some favorite spots for food are Husk (Pro Tip: Sit at the bar in the small building to the right of the main house), Darling Oyster Bar, Bodega, or Caviar & Bananas (if you’re on the go). To treat yourself, check out Camellia’s at Hotel Bennet, Bin 152, or Carmella’s Cafe & Dessert Bar.
