Rooftop Review: Sunset with a Spritz

What better way to celebrate the Holy City than from above? Charleston’s rooftop bar scene is unmatched. And while Charleston may be an east coast gem, the city’s sunsets are still top notch. It was nearly impossible to check out every rooftop in my short three week trip, but I had my fair share of stunning skies and chic cocktails. Here are my top picks:

treat yourself: The Citrus Club at The Dewberry

Pros: In my opinion, this is the best rooftop bar in Charleston. You’ll get close ups of church spires and views of the skyline and water for miles.

Cons: A pricier option, you’ll need a reservation or be game for the waiting list. Hotel guests get priority.

Recommendations: Their signature drinks include the bourbon, rum, and passionfruit combined “Tropical Itch,” and “The Hawk’s Perch,” a gin, lemon, and blueberry mix. Also, you can never go wrong with some oysters.

for classic conversation: The Rooftop at the Vendue

Pros: For a casual vibe, date spot, or place to catch up with friends, The Rooftop at the Vendue is perfect for any occasion, and it’s very affordable.

Cons: It can get busy right around sunset, so get there early for a table or spot at the bar.

Recommendations: Get the Orange Crush or Sunset Spritz, and snack on the Greek Meze Plate and Grilled Fish Tacos.

when the sun goes down: Cocktail Club

Pros: If you’re in the mood for going out, but want a cozy place to converse, this is it. The craft cocktails are really creative and this is a great place to go for a date or with a group of friends.

Cons: The rooftop is small, but the relaxed vibe makes up for the lack of a skyline view.

Recommendations: The bartenders here make a mean Espresso Martini, but as for signature cocktails, try the “Send Nudes,” made with pineapple-infused tequila.

dance the night away: Uptown Social

Pros: Uptown Social is perfect for a fun night out. On many occasions you could find a live band downstairs, a club-like atmosphere on the second floor, and a relaxed party outside on the rooftop.

Cons: Be prepared to pay a cover fee.

for carefree days: Red’s Ice house

Pros: At Red’s you can eat a hearty meal downstairs then climb to the rooftop for a view of Shem Creek. This spot is super casual and a great afternoon hang out. You may even see dolphins in the water below!

Cons: It’s a short drive from downtown, located in Mount Pleasant.

for sunset chasers

While Charleston has many great rooftops, two of my personal favorite sunset spots are ground (or sea) level. Waterfront Park by the iconic Pineapple Fountain is host to relaxing vibes, and located close to the hubbub of the French Quarter. And if you want undisturbed peace, go to Sullivan’s Island Beach for a picture-perfect night.
