9 Ideas for Downtown Dates in Charleston

This city is dreamy as can be, making any ordinary activity ten times better. So what are you waiting for? Go get out there. But beware, you might fall in love with Charleston instead.

spruce up your morning coffee

Check out Harken Cafe & Bakery for a shop prettier than a picture. With all kinds of coffee, breakfast and lunch offerings, this funky cafe on Queen Street is sure to impress and make any morning better. Or, for an iced latte to cool you down from the heat, check out Bitty & Beau’s Coffee, a fan favorite.

let the city do the talking

Sometimes simple ideas are better ones, so trust me on this one: go for a walk around the historic district. From the battery, to Rainbow Row, to historic mansions and crooked cobblestones, Charleston itself is a character. Full of charm and stories, use the beauty of the city to your advantage as your imagination runs wild.

sweet teeth & treats

In this southern sunshine, nothing is better (or more classic) than an ice cream date. But for an elevated experience, check out Carmella’s Cafe and Dessert Bar on E. Bay St. From coffee, to divine gelato, to dessert cocktails for a nightcap, this cafe has got you covered for all occasions.

wine & dine (obviously)

Do I even have to suggest this? Charleston’s food scene is absolutely unmatched. With everything from freshly caught seafood to southern classics, you really cannot go wrong. Some of my favorites are Husk, Firefly Distillery, Bin 152, or the Gin Joint.

play with your food

Maybe you want an experience for your palate. Create your own oyster tasting by ordering a bunch of different kinds and ranking them. Check out my other post from NICO, where a friend and I taste-tested every oyster on the menu. It’s a super fun way to spend a meal.

hello sunset!

It’s hard to pass up chasing a sunset, especially when your backdrop includes the Holy City’s steeple-dotted skyline. Check out one of Charleston’s rooftop bars at golden hour, or take a sail out on the harbor to relax and reflect upon a romantic sight.

do you believe in ghosts?

Charleston is famous for its deeply rooted history, and has plenty of tours available. But go further than your typical horse and carriage ride and delve into the mysteries of the past - with a ghost tour.

take me out (to the ballgame)

Head on down to Riley Park for a Minor League Baseball game. It’s a great way to relax and enjoy a beautiful night. The Charleston RiverDogs play from April to September.

make a picnic bucket-list

There’s nothing more romantic than a picnic, so try out all the amazing spots that Charleston has to offer… in one day! Pack a basket with different courses and bike to Colonial Lake, Washington Park, or one of the city’s 19 parks. Finish up your day at Waterfront Park for sunset.

With these suggestions, you’ll be sure to fall in love with the Holy City itself. Ready to #ExploreCharleston? Discover more.
