Charleston Itineraries: Across the Arthur Ravenel

By Katie Hopsicker

Spend a day in Mount Pleasant and Sullivan’s Island…

Just over the Arthur Ravenel Bridge is Mount Pleasant, one of Charleston’s suburbs and home to a myriad of shops, restaurants, and attractions. If you’re staying in town for a few days, the trip across the Cooper River is well worth it, and a nice change of scenery from the busyness of Charleston’s downtown buzz. Get ready to #ExploreCharleston!

morning

Begin your morning with a ferry ride and history tour of Fort Sumter. Fort Sumter Tours leaves from Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, and has many tours and combo packages to tour both the fort and the USS Yorktown. The fort itself holds a museum teaching travelers about the Civil War battles that took place, and the ferry ride gives views of the Holy City, Castle Pinckney, Fort Sumter, and all the surrounding islands. If you’re lucky, you’re bound to see a dolphin or two!

afternoon

After your morning excursion, fuel up on some seafood. Eat, drink, paddleboard in the harbor, go fishing, or stroll on the boardwalk at the Waterfront at Shem Creek. There’s plenty to do here to pass the time. Head to NICO for oysters and wine, Shem Creek Crab House for a hearty seafood meal, or Saltwater Cowboy for southern food on an outdoor deck. Grab a drink on the roof of Red’s Ice House, and enjoy views of the creek and Holy City harbor.

evening

No evening is complete without an epic sunset. If a beach stroll is more your style, head just down the road to Sullivan’s Island. The many stations have immaculate spots for sunset watching, beach walks, or swimming. Make sure to bring your suit and some snacks, and enjoy the sun setting over the sand dunes. It’s the perfect end to a perfect day exploring Charleston!
